Let’s embark on a literary journey together.

Writers I’ve mentored have placed work in the New York Times Modern Love column, Salon, and NBC, have completed book proposals and manuscripts, set up personal writing practices, sold books to presses like Dial and Simon and Schuster and found new joy in writing.

  • Coaching

Sometimes it’s most helpful to work together over a period of time—whether it’s 3 sessions or 3 months. I’ve helped writers complete book proposals, make massive headway in book projects and polish (and publish) essays via coaching. I’ll begin our work by having you fill out a form exploring intention and goals and we’ll make a plan.

“Thank you for rescuing me from the agony of perfection paralysis more times than I can count!”

-Emily Farris, Author: “I’ll Just Be Five More Minutes: And Other Tales from My ADHD Brain” (Hachette)

“Sarah is a brilliant writer, editor and teacher. I could not have written my memoir without her. She worked side by side with me for over two years through the proposal, to the publishing deal, to delivering the full manuscript. I am in awe of her commitment to the craft and her skillful support.”

-Parvati Shallow, Author: “I Survived, Now What?” (forthcoming, Dial Press), Survivor/ Traitors

“It was an absolute pleasure to work with Sarah. I appreciated her thoughtful guidance, and the ways in which she truly understood what I was trying to communicate, and then gently helped me clarify my message. During our work together, not only did she help me with pieces that were eventually accepted for publication (twice now- in Modern Love and in Huff Post), she also taught me valuable aspects of writing craft.”

-Sara Glass, Author: Kissing Girls on Shabbat (Simon and Schuster)

“Sarah is remarkable at holding space for other’s stories, for validating her student's experiences while gently guiding them towards tangible goals. Her expertise and professional caliber create a beautiful, nurturing opportunity to expand creativity. She saw talents in me that I was completely disconnected from, and offered a realistic path toward outward realization of my strengths.”

-Clare Caldera, LATimes contributor

How I Work

I’m passionate about helping writers use their voice to fullest effect and believe in the co-creation that can happen in these spaces. I bring a lifetime of writing, 2 MFAs, and fifteen years of teaching contemplative practice to my work. My students have had work published in the NYTimes, LATimes and other spots, have secured book deals, finished manuscripts and found brand new angles on their work.

It all starts with intention. Whether we work together on one piece or in coaching over time, I’ll want to know: what is your intention for the writing? Is it exploratory, for fun and expression, or goal oriented toward a particular publication or aim? What you’re aiming for helps me know how to best give feedback. I offer both line edits and developmental edits/ overviews. No intention is too giant or small. I’ll meet you there!

I believe in the following principles:

1) A balance of structure and ease: I’ll give you grounded, practical, craft-level feedback. I want this to be epically useful! I will deliver on my edits—-and I will stay open to curiosity, your questions and the magic of what may arise in creative practice.

2) Everyone is a writer when writing: Writing is a practice and craft, and we’re all on different parts of the path. I’m here to meet you where you are and take you where you want to be. All words are good words in this space.

3) Through repetition the magic arises: I BELIEVE in the magic of revision and rewriting. I know how a piece can transform over drafts and I know the “kick-back” effect—-how the writer herself can also change over drafts. I’m here for that transformation.

4) Trauma-Informed writing spaces are vital: I approach my teaching from a trauma-informed lens, and I want you to sound like you (!) not me. Part of my job is listening to help bring your unique voice out.
